Brain Tumor

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within or around the brain, potentially disrupting its function. Tumors are classified as primary (originating in the brain) or secondary (metastasizing from other organs, like lungs or breasts). Primary tumors include gliomas (e.g., glioblastoma, aggressive and malignant) and meningiomas (often benign but problematic due to pressure). Symptoms vary by tumor location and size, commonly including headaches (worse in the morning), seizures, vision or hearing changes, memory issues, personality changes, and motor deficits like weakness or balance problems.

Causes are largely unknown, though risk factors include genetic conditions (e.g., neurofibromatosis), radiation exposure, and family history. Secondary tumors often link to cancers elsewhere. Diagnosis involves neurological exams, imaging (MRI or CT scans) for tumor size and location, and sometimes biopsy to determine malignancy. Advanced techniques like functional MRI map brain activity to guide treatment.

Treatment depends on tumor type, grade, and patient health. Surgery aims to remove as much tumor as possible without damaging critical brain areas. Radiation therapy targets residual or inoperable tumors, while chemotherapy (e.g., temozolomide) combats malignant cells, though effectiveness varies. Targeted therapies and immunotherapy are emerging for specific tumors. Supportive care, including steroids to reduce swelling or anti-seizure medications, manages symptoms. Rehabilitation with physical, occupational, or speech therapy aids recovery of lost functions.

Brain tumors profoundly impact life, causing physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Prognosis ranges from manageable (benign tumors) to poor (high-grade gliomas), with survival varying from months to years. Emotional support and palliative care are vital for patients and families. Preventive measures are limited, but early detection through symptom awareness improves outcomes. Ongoing research into precision medicine, gene therapies, and less invasive techniques offers hope for better management, emphasizing the need for comprehensive care to enhance quality of life.
